Mike and Jay are back to talk about the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! If you've only seen the Johnny Depp version from 2005 there is something wrong with you and I feel so very very sorry for you.

Usually I agree with Mike on almost all things, yet I do not have the hatred for the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka that he does. The remake will never be in the same league as the 1971 Gene Wilder original, but I still thought it was a decent film.

I love that Mike talked about only 20 years of remakes, when in fact Tim Burton has two total movies that aren't remakes. He was kicked off the set of A Nightmare Before Christmas. Otherwise, it was just remakes, or already existing properties. Starting with Pee Wee's Big Adventure all the way to today.

Charlie and the chocolate factory is more accurate to the original novel than Willie Wonka. Even if I don't think it is better as a film.

The 'knife seller' outside the factory- he is sort of like a tinker. But he was a knife sharpener, which was a thing in Germany until fairly recently. He would set up in a spot (kind of like a hotdog wagon does) and the women of the area would come to him to have their dull knives resharpened. Or perhaps buy a new one, if desired. That profession is pretty much gone in our new disposable oriented culture.

Grandpa joe is also just kind of a bad role model, he scorns Charlie’s mother when she asked where Charlie got the bread and says what does it matter how he got it he got it which implies he’d rather live a luscious life built on crimes than live in poverty, he’s the one that gets Charlie to stray and drink the fizzy lifting drink and he’s the one who freaks on Wonka when he doesn’t get the answer he likes

No... Incorrect... The villain is the evil inside of us all as people. Greed. Glutony. Pride . envy . hate. Wrath. All of these are present in this film. Greed. The threatening of one of the parents to sell slugworth the gobstopper. Gluttony ... Agustus... Grampa joe is wrathful after hearing wonkas reasoning . they are all there ... Even if the film didnt realize what they were doing.. That is why the film holds up.. The allegorical hierarchically truth is all there . and the presentation is key as it never beats you over the head with a lesson . it lets you find them so you can learn

Just finished the original (think I saw the remake once, dont remember a thing about it though) and Ive got to say its been a while since I had a film so heavily recommended to me that I didnt like. I read the book when I was younger and found it very funny and charming, but I must admit I didnt laugh once to the 1971 film; just that awful feeling where you sort of vaguely acknowledge that youve gotten the joke by lightly snorting and then thats it. Boat Scene and the sets were interesting though

Wait, it's more or less implied that Wonka controlled where the tickets went, why did he choose a bunch of snotty, spoiled brats? Did he think they could overcome their flaws and be worthy of the factory? Did he pick a bunch of shithead brats, specifically so that he could gamble it all on Charlie and hope he'd learned by their example?

Willy Wonka was NOT upset at the end. Even the first time I saw it at the theater as a child, after Charlie gives back the everlasting gobstopper, and Willy capitulates, I _knew_ it was an act to test Charlie's honesty. The final test, the dragon at the top of the mountain. Charlie failed with the fizzy lifting drink, but he _had_ passed all the other tests represented by the various rooms of the tour.

19 kun oldin
Hiraghm
Hiraghm

I always thought the old folks were in bed, not because they were literally infirm, but because they'd given up on life. They grew old and just accepted the idea that, "well, we're old, so we're going to be weak and crippled and eventually die right here in this bed". Grandpa Joe was the who didn't quite accept that; and when Charlie won the ticket, that was his "f* it" moment. Or as Kaylee put it, while facing death by reavers, after discovering that Simon wanted to boink her... "Screw that! I'm going to live!" ("Serenity", if you're so backwards you haven't seen it yet)

19 kun oldin
Hiraghm
Hiraghm

The only way the original Willy Wonka movie works, and makes any kind of sense... It's a setup. He's not randomly choosing among children. Charlie was targeted, and the whole tour of the factory was a test to see if CHARLIE was worthy. It was guaranteed that Charlie would, eventually, somehow, get a ticket... Wonka would see to it. Then, imo, he made sure the other tickets went to children who would represent... to Charlie... the vices Wonka detested.

I think the purpose of the cut-in-half office is that it preserves the whole mystery of Wonka beyond his public-facing persona and into the private realm. Like if they'd done the scene in a normal office it would have just read as "shows over, Charlie gets yelled at by the manager" but the way it's done it's left open for Wonka not being sincere.

Charlie's mother tries to spare his feelings in case he doesn't find a golden ticket but she still encourgaes him before he leaves the laundry. - Mother: "Charlie, you'll get your chance. One day things will change." - Charlie: "When? When will they change?" - Mother: "Probably when you least expect it." This is exactly what happens to Charlie in the movie. Things change when he least expects it. Cheer up Charlie is my favorite song in the movie. It's about not giving up hope.

The final scene with the argument was not Willy being angry it was him acting angry to see if Charlie will do the right thing cause that's the case in both movies Willy knows that Charlie is the right the kid to take over the business the moment he sees him in the group and in the first movie he fakes anger to see if Charlie will live up to expectations he has for him and he does

Charlie is the best role model ever he is born into poorness and has to work to support his family you can tell his heart is in the right place the moment you see him with his family cause he's uses all of his money to buy a loaf of bread and and to pay for grandpa Joe's tobacco and unlike the others who only want to win just for the prize at the end while Charlie truly wants it cause it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity that he will never get a second chance at so he wanted it truly so he can experience something no one in his position would ever get to experience and he truly wants it and he's very honest rather than give the gobstoper to slugworth he gives it to Willy cause he knows he screwed up and decided that since he broke the rules he would rather give up a one of a kind candy than ruin the hard work of his idol
